& making bookmarks.
Are you a reader?
Despite being a very slow reader I love books.
Being a slow reader and reading multiple books at any one time, means I make good use of bookmarks.
So, I made some. Some for me and some for you.
Each of these wooden backed bookmarks is an original watercolour and ink artwork.
Each is the same woven flax image, yet each is different.
Flax is such a ‘kiwi’ plant, easily recognised and used as a motif in many New Zealand artworks.
Woven flax is found in many places within Aotearoa.
It weaves through cultures, it weaves our lives to the past and the future, and it weaves the stories of our lives together.
One example of this is a kete I have, well used, falling apart, but too special to dispose of. It was made by my partner’s cousin for my mother-in-law from flax grown in their garden. When my mother-in-law passed, I was gifted the kete, already well used and very much loved, it still has a place in my home.
To create these bookmarks, I began with the artwork then sealed it. I mounted that onto the wooden backing, trimmed, punched and added the cord. Then I signed each artwork.
These are available in my studio and on my website.
